STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擠omestic abuse may often happen behind closed doors, but the problem never is bound by age, ethnicity, gender, income, race or other factors.
During a Tuesday [March 1] program at Mississippi State, Christy Pickering will share personal experiences from an abusive relationship鈥攁nd how eventually she found happiness.
Free to all, the presentation titled 鈥淕irl, You Deserve Better鈥 begins at 6 p.m. in Lee Hall鈥檚 Bettersworth Auditorium. The university鈥檚 Center for Student Activities and Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life are sponsors.
Pickering is a Biloxi certified public accountant and member of the Board of Trustees, State Institutions of Higher Learning. A business administration graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi, she was appointed to the College Board by Gov. Haley Barbour in 2008.
Over the years, Pickering has received numerous awards for service to her local community and state. In 1996, she was named the Small Business Accountant Advocate for the State of Mississippi, and two years later, received the Harrison County Small Business Excellence Award.
Pickering was recognized as Rotarian of the Year in 1991 by the Biloxi Rotary Club, which she had previously served as president, secretary and treasurer.
Also a member of the 1991 inaugural class of Leadership Gulf Coast, Pickering was recognized in 2009 as an Outstanding Community Leader of South Mississippi by the Sun Herald and Mississippi Business Journal.
