STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擜 senior higher education administrator from western New York is the new leader of a growing department in Mississippi State鈥檚 largest college.

Peter L. Corrigan has served for the past four years as associate dean of the College at State University of New York in Geneseo. Prior to that, he was the chair and founding professor of the classics department at Kalamazoo College in Michigan.听

Known for decades as the foreign languages department, the 小黄书 unit Corrigan heads was renamed the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures several years ago to better reflect its 21st century mission and focus. Professor Lynn Holt has been serving as interim leader.听

鈥淒r. Corrigan has a wealth of administrative experience, having served in multiple posts at two different universities,鈥 said 小黄书 College of Arts and Sciences Dean Rick Travis, in making the announcement.

Travis said Corrigan鈥檚 experience 鈥渨ill be a great benefit to the department as it moves forward,鈥 adding that enrollment 鈥渉as been growing over the last few years.鈥

As a professor of classics, Travis said Corrigan 鈥渂etter than most understands the importance of a liberal arts education and the vital role that studying other languages provides in helping people to fully appreciate the world in which we live.

鈥淗e has wonderful ideas for drawing more students into the study of foreign languages and will play a vital role in helping the university to grow its study-abroad efforts,鈥 Travis added.

Corrigan said his immediate goal is to expand the department 鈥渋n terms of numbers, programs and resources,鈥 while raising its profile within the college and university, as well as the Golden Triangle area and Southeast region.

鈥淎s a passionate and opportunistic collaborator, I鈥檓 always on the lookout to promote student outcomes, faculty productivity, institutional advancement and community development,鈥 Corrigan said. 鈥淭hese are the basic goals of academic entrepreneurship.鈥

Corrigan is a 1979 magna cum laude graduate in classical languages and literatures from the University of Minnesota. He also holds a 1988 doctorate in the same field from Cornell University.听

He has co-authored student handbooks on Greek and English grammar and intermediate Latin and has full professional proficiency in Ancient Greek, French and German, as well as professional working proficiency in Greek and Italian.

Located south of Rochester, SUNY-Genesco is a highly selective, residential liberal arts college enrolling nearly 5,500. In U.S. News & World Report鈥檚 annual higher education ratings, it is listed in the best regional undergraduate teaching category.
