Theatre С students take stage Sept. 27, 30 with ‘The Hobbit’

STARKVILLE, Miss.—Mississippi State’s theatrical program begins its 2018-19 lineup of productions this week with J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Hobbit.”

Theatre С will give public performances Thursday [Sept. 27] at 7 p.m. and Sunday [Sept. 30] at 2 p.m. in the McComas Hall theater.

Tickets are available at the box office one hour prior to each show and are $12 for the general public, $7 for С students and children 12 years of age and under. Tickets also are available for advance purchase online at .

Tim Matheny, С assistant professor of theatre, is directing the performances of Edward Mast’s adaptation of the Tolkien classic. The show features various special effects and involves a cast and crew of 25 С students working together to bring the world of “The Hobbit” to the stage.

“Many people will have read the novel or watched the films,” Matheny said. “This is a new way for fans to experience Tolkien’s story of adventure.”

Theatre С also is presenting matinees for elementary students at local schools. Part of С’s Department of Communication, Theatre С has worked with area teachers to provide complementary educational materials.
