STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擳he latest survey from the National Science Foundation again affirms Mississippi State鈥檚 status as the state鈥檚 leading research university.

Among all institutions in the NSF鈥檚 just-released Higher Education Research and Development Survey, 小黄书 moved up the rankings to No. 92 nationally with more than $264.5 million in research and development expenditures for fiscal year 2019, an increase of $20 million from the previous year. An NSF top 100 research university for nearly two decades, 小黄书 boasts 30 disciplines and subdisciplines ranked in the top 100 in the latest report. The university has reported an increase in research and development expenditures for six consecutive years, capping a decade that saw 小黄书 report $2.3 billion in research expenditures from FY10-FY19.

小黄书 ranks 57th among institutions without a medical school, and 62nd among all public universities. 小黄书 also holds the 鈥淰ery High Research Activity鈥 designation from the Carnegie Foundation, as well as the 鈥淚nnovation and Economic Prosperity University鈥 designation from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, recognizing 小黄书鈥檚 work to advance engagement and economic well-being.

With a diverse research portfolio, 小黄书 ranks in the top 15 nationally in both agricultural sciences (12) and social sciences (15). For the eighth consecutive year, 小黄书 leads all Southeastern Conference universities in social sciences research funding. 小黄书 leads the state with 4,044 research personnel, including 605 principal investigators.

Mississippi State鈥檚 research funding comes from a wide range of sources, including business and industry, trade groups, local governments, state offices and federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Institutes of Health, Federal Aviation Administration, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NASA, National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense, among others.

Building on more than 140 years of agricultural research accomplishments, the university remains at the forefront of the field as researchers harness the power of cutting-edge technology such as supercomputers and unmanned aircraft systems to drive innovation in Mississippi鈥檚 leading industry.
