STARKVILLE, Miss.鈥擳he Mississippi State Visual Arts Center Gallery is hosting a month-long exhibition presenting the work of artist Laurel Sucsy.
鈥淭he Other Way Around鈥 features Suscy鈥檚 paintings and photographs on display through March 5. Admission is free, and viewing hours are Monday through Friday, 1-6 p.m., and Saturday, 1-4 p.m. The gallery is located at 808 University Drive.
Joseph Morzuch, an assistant professor in 小黄书鈥檚 art department, describes Sucsy鈥檚 work as abstract, yet familiar.
鈥淗er paintings recall still life and landscape motifs as easily as they resist classification. They are anchored but elusive and seem in a state of constant becoming,鈥 Morzuch said. 鈥淲here her paintings coalesce over time through layers of adding and removing pigment, Sucsy鈥檚 photographs portray an air of immediacy. The two bodies of work combine to explore perception and the act of seeing.鈥
A graduate of Bowdoin College in Maine, Sucsy received her Master of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of Art at the University of Pennsylvania. Her work has appeared in exhibitions all over the country in venues such as the John Davis Gallery in Hudson, New York, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and the Clough-Hanson Gallery, both in Memphis, Tennessee. She also runs the Women鈥檚 Culture Club, a program created to foster community and interest in the arts held at Crosstown Arts in Memphis.
